Jenkins: Windows phones among latest advances

Posted by Perusal Saturday, October 30, 2010 0 comments

Here are some stories I’m following for you:

* Microsoft has, at last, released its new Windows Phone 7 cell-phone platform. The company suffered quite a bit of humiliation with some of its recent mobile offerings, but early reports seem generally and surprisingly favorable. It has completely redesigned its mobile approach, a must if it hopes to compete in this ever more volatile market.

* The move toward integrating the Internet with TV has accelerated as Logitech, Sony and other vendors are releasing their Web-connected devices. There will be no more hotly contested business than the trend toward interactive TV, as it offers a huge untapped market.

There are several approaches and devices emerging, and it’s fascinating to see just how many different ways businesses are approaching this new digital frontier. While many of these are promising, I think it will be a while before we see anyone take a lead in this area.

* The Adobe corporation is probably having better days after Facebook published its experience comparing Adobe Flash and an HTML 5-based player. You’ll recall from recent columns that the upcoming HTML 5 Web specification offers video features that would make Flash unnecessary, a definite blow to Adobe.

Zdnet.com quotes the Facebook blog as saying, “While we tested this new player on other mobile browsers, we found that Flash still outperformed their HTML5 video implementations.” It’s likely that HTML 5 will eventually be an excellent video platform in itself, but this post shows that it has a way to go until it can be relied on completely for multimedia.

* The Internet continues to cut into local retail sales, and merchants are struggling to find ways to compete.

Recent news from Amazon won’t make them happy in this regard, as the company has released an Apple iPhone app that scans bar codes of products in stores and takes the user to Amazon to compare prices on the item. The customer then has the option to purchase from Amazon.

I suppose I feel two opposite ways about this. I love the ability to use the Web to find great deals, but the last thing we need to do is to sabotage local merchants who pay local taxes and support the community in other ways. This is a double bind indeed.

I recently set up a social networking system for a local company who has taken this issue on in a big way. Rather than let themselves be outdone, they have innovated using social media to create a sort of ecosystem with their customers, making buying from them very attractive. This is the future of local retailing, creating value in every transaction and supporting customers at every turn. This applies also to bands, bloggers and anyone wanting to make sales or have an impact on a customer base.

* Finally, good news from the micro-blogging service Posterous. They’ve released an Apple iPhone app that allows you to update your Posterous blog, Facebook, Twitter and other social accounts via the Autopost feature in the app.

This includes pictures and video, an amazing offering. I think mobile blogging will be a huge trend, and this makes it so simple, assuming it works correctly.

The quickly evolving and increasingly more powerful mobile devices will make such offerings very valuable over time. The cell phone has been called the next computing platform for some time, and any feature that can be added from the desktop is always welcome.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Audience, Inc. a global provider of advanced voice and audio processing technology, today announced the latest addition to its family of intelligent voice processors for mobile phones, the A1028 chip.  Featuring the company's EarSmart™ technology that replicates the functions of human hearing to enhance sound quality and suppress noise, the A1028 voice processor is the first in the industry to offer processing capabilities that improve mobile speech recognition performance in noisy environments.  The voice processor also extends Audience's non-stationary noise suppression solution to support handheld speakerphone mode in mobile devices.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20101013/AQ81209)

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20101013/AQ81209)

Engineered to imitate the complex processing that occurs from the inner ear to the brain, EarSmart technology distinguishes and interprets sounds as people do naturally, to isolate and enhance the primary voice signal and filter out unwanted background noise.  The result is clear communications, allowing mobile users to hear and be heard, nearly anywhere.  Advancing on earlier Audience processors, the A1028 system-on-chip processor is further improving the mobile voice experience.  It suppresses noise interference for speech recognition applications, including voice search, speech-to-text, voice commands, voice dialing, navigation, and more, to improve accuracy and performance.

The A1028 chip also offers processing capabilities to deliver call clarity by providing non-stationary noise suppression to block ambient sounds when using handheld speakerphone mode on mobile devices.  As a result, mobile users can use handheld speakerphone capabilities wherever they go, and receive clear communications for video calling, voice memos, or to multi-task, continuing a phone conversation while accessing handset data features, from contact information to the mobile Web.  With Audience's A1028 voice processor and EarSmart technology, mobile phones can now deliver a clear voice experience across more handset functions, in any environment.

"With the introduction of the A1028 processor, Audience is again advancing its leadership in auditory technology, and applying our voice processing expertise to improve the experience for mobile customers," said Peter Santos, president and chief executive officer, Audience.  "We're continuing to innovate ways to support speech recognition services, while also bringing noise suppression and voice enhancement to other important modes on mobile handsets.  The new capabilities offered by the A1028, demonstrate our commitment to provide the world's most intelligent voice processors to improve products that benefit our everyday lives."

"Several of the leading smartphones and advanced feature phones launched this year have placed an increasing importance on enhancing voice quality and supporting voice-enabled technologies," said Linley Gwennap, principal analyst of The Linley Group.  "The voice processing capability offered by Audience is helping to drive this trend.  Technology that can reduce the effect of noise in mobile environments is critical to improving the usability of voice-driven applications."

Handsets offering Audience's A1028 voice processor will be launching in the first half of 2011.

A1028 Key Features

  • Powerful Processing:  the A1028 chip includes a low-power, high-performance custom digital signal processor (DSP) core to provide industry-leading stationary and non-stationary noise suppression for transmit and receive, acoustic echo cancellation (AEC), and programmable voice equalization (VEQ) algorithms, and now provides noise suppression for handheld speakerphone mode and automatic speech recognition (ASR) applications.
  • Customizable Features:  the A1028 processor includes customizable voice quality tuning capabilities, a post-equalization filter for voice color tuning and to allow handset manufacturers to manage frequency response, and a multi-band compander (MBC) to improve audio quality and reduce distortion for end-users when receiving communication, or using the phone's speakerphone function.
  • Easy Integration:  Audience has also introduced a new graphical design tool, AuViD 1.0, to support the design and integration process with mobile equipment manufacturers.  AuViD 1.0 provides visually-guided tools allowing handset manufacturers to easily tune and customize the audio features of their handset models.  The A1028 chip is provided in a highly compact 2.7mm x 3.5mm, 40-pin WLCSP (0.5mm pitch) package that can fit any handset style or design to support all existing mobile phone architectures.

About Audience

Audience is a leading global provider of intelligent voice and audio processors for the mobile marketplace, based on pioneering work to reverse-engineer human hearing.  The company's technology is redefining the mobile voice experience by enhancing call quality, and suppressing noise to enable clear communications in any environment and optimizing performance of speech-based applications.  Audience technology is featured in mobile handsets from leading manufacturers in markets across Asia-Pacific, Europe and the U.S.  The company was the Silver Winner in the 2008 Wall Street Journal "Technology Innovation Awards" and the Winner of the Semiconductor category.  It was also selected as the Most Innovative True Mobile Start-Up for the "2008 GSMA Mobile Innovation Global Awards." Audience is one of 34 founding member companies of the Open Handset Alliance and the only one with advanced noise suppression technology.  Investors in Audience include Vulcan Capital, New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Tallwood Venture Capital and VentureTech Alliance. This post is just to give you a quick rundown of three Red Label Android Phones that were unveiled. Later, I'll post the official press release notes for each device.

Breaking new frontiers to empower Filipino consumers, Cherry Mobile goes beyond the
usual with the launch of its Android Smartphones powered by Qualcomm: the Nova, Magnum HD and Superion, the First Tablet Phone in the Philippines. The said Android smartphones are first handsets to be released under Cherry Mobile's new high-end Red Label Collection.

"We started small, launching four models last year, but we dreamt big. We have elevated from
providing affordable dual SIM handsets, to providing high end phones with our Red Label Collection, first of which is the Android Smartphones, powered by Qualcomm,"
shares Mr. Maynard Ngu, CEO of Cherry Mobile.

Cherry Mobile's latest handsets integrate the latest versions of the Android operating system,
whose names run a gamut of delectable treats like, cupcake 1.5, donut 1.6, Éclair 2.0, Éclair 2.1 and latest, Froyo 2.2.

"Launching the Android Smartphones is another, milestone for us, especially because we are
featuring SUPERION, the first tablet phone in the Philippines,"
says Mr. Roger Chiu, President of Cherry Mobile.

With a plethora of useful Android services such as Maps, Gmail and Marketplace and GPS-support, the Éclair-operated Cherry Mobile Nova is set to defy the bounds of what an affordable smartphone can deliver. Priced at only Php 11,490, Nova is too sensible a deal to pass up.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 — Nokia and Microsoft recently launched their latest mobile offerings in Malaysia to much less fanfare than the massively hyped iPhone 4.

The Finnish phone-maker trotted out its new N-series device, the N8, and boasted that it was the “best cameraphone in the world.”

At the same time, the United States software giant showed off two phones carrying its new mobile OS, Windows Phone 7.

As upbeat as they were about their devices, it can’t be denied that the current king of the smartphone heap is Apple.

The iPhone has become iconic, a status symbol, the latest must-have.

No other phone has had people queuing up for days despite cries from tech pundits everywhere that “it’s just a phone, people!”

At every new smart-phone launch, someone will ask: “Is it the iPhone-killer?” Is the N8 one? Does Microsoft have a chance at killing the Jesus-phone?

Sorry, Nokia, Microsoft. There can only be one phone Messiah and you don’t have it.

Windows Phone 7: impressions

One thing you can say about the Windows Phone 7 interface: it sure is pretty. Windows Mobile has been put to rest as the new UI has gone through a complete facelift. There is a fluidity and slickness that rivals the multiple screen changes of the iPhone and Android phones.

So far only two models will be available in Malaysia come November: HTC’s HD7 and the HTC 7 Mozart. The former will be a Maxis exclusive, retailing at RM2399 while the cheaper Mozart will come in at RM2099.

Though the pricing is competitive, the phones will have a tough time breaking the consumer market.

Why? It’s obvious that Microsoft is pushing Windows Phone 7 squarely at the enterprise market. Take the integrated Office Hub, the most polished of the phone’s featureset that gives users easy access to Word, Excel and PowerPoint. There’s also SharePoint integration as well as easy connections to the cloud storage service SkyDrive.

Earth to Microsoft: how many people in Malaysia (besides Microsofties) use SkyDrive or have even heard of it? You get the feeling thatMicrosoft is aiming hard at the enterprise market currently claimed by RIM and its BlackBerries.

Microsoft has left out one feature, though. Cut and paste. Ironic, considering Microsoft invented the function. Malaysian users will also have no access to Marketplace, its online app store and neither will they be able to use the Zune music store or Xbox Live integration. And what’s with the missing IM client, Microsoft?

Despite the polish of its interface, Windows Phone 7 is neither groundbreaking nor all that innovative. It does however give us hope that unlike Windows Mobile, future phones running on it won’t suck.

Nokia, oh, Nokia

Once upon a time, Nokia unleashed the ultimate do-it-all phone. They called it the N95. After that model, Nokia has yet to produce anything as good. The N96 was boring, the N97 a bug-ridden paperweight and now the N8 is a step forward in some ways, a step back in others.

The N8 is still running Symbian, an OS that has not aged well. What might get people buying it here is the ridiculously low price of RM1690. You are getting incredible bang for your buck with that price as the N8 has features that include:

A 3.5-inch AMOLED widescreen

16GB internal storage

12-megapixel camera with Xenon flash with autofocus

HSDPA/3G/EDGE connectivity

If it’s anywhere as good as the N82, the N8 will be one heck of a cameraphone. Everything else? Well. Symbian is an OS that tends to be fiddly but Nokia faithful will find the UI as familiar and as easy to use as ever.

Build-wise, the N8 is probably one of the sexiest designs Nokia hasever produced. It makes you wonder if the Finns finally saw sense and kidnapped someone from HTC — it’s light, svelte and has a display to rival the iPhone’s much touted Retina display.

It’s ridiculously affordable but you don’t feel Nokia cut any corners. If you’re not into apps but more into multimedia, the N8 takes great pictures and HD video, plays high quality video as well and is a serviceable music player.

All in all, neither phones are serious challengers in the smartphone market. The Nokia N8 is a multimedia bargain while the Windows Phone 7 OS looks promising.  But for the latter, with some features conspicuously missing, I’d suggest buyers wait until the platform is updated. Microsoft says that will likely happen in early 2011.

The smartphone market looks seriously crowded at the moment but for consumers, more choice is always a good thing.

MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA – After successfully penetrating the entry- to mid-range market for mobile phones in the Philippines, phone manufacturer Cherry Mobile is setting its sights on the cutthroat high-end market that is dominated by major phone brands.

The company recently introduced its first batch of touch screen phones that are running Google’s Android operating system.

The Nova, Magnum HD, and Superion are the company’s latest entrant in the high-end user segment. It is a follow up to the launch of the company’s Eclipse, considered its first high-end phone and also uses the Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.5 OS.

All the Cherry Mobile Android phones have touch screen capabilities, 3G and WiFi connectivity, and high definition camera functions. These are also the first Cherry Mobile phones running on Qualcomm processors.

Sizes differ for each model, with the Nova being the smallest and the Superion as its biggest. The latter is also considered as the largest Android phone in any market as it has a 7-inch touch screen. In fact, the Superion is touted to be the company’s flagship tablet-type device to compete with the Apple iPad.

Each phone also uses a different Android flavor. For instance, the Nova uses Android Eclair 2.1 for smartphones while the Magnun HD and Superion are running on Android Froyo 2.2, which is used for devices with larger screens.

The company is also upgrading its Cherry Zone software download service to allow local users to download new Android applications.

The phones are also being priced at nearly half the cost of other brands, which the company is hoping will also target a bigger audience outside the traditional high-end user. The Nova is priced at P11,490, the Magnum HD is priced att P18,990 while the Superion is priced at P19,990.

Lonson Alejandrino, sales head of Cosmic Technologies, which Cherry Mobile in the Philippines, said in an interview that one of the reasons for bringing the high-end phones in the Philippines is largely to introduce cheaper devices that have the same functionalities as other brands of mobile phones.

He said that while the lower price point for their phones is a major driver for their growth in the Philippines, the growing affluence of Filipinos is also driving the demand for such phones.

Microsoft Corp. on Monday unveiled the first wave of handsets running Windows Phone 7, the software giant’s latest mobile operating system, in an attempt to make new gains in the smartphone market.

Microsoft, together with its partners, showcased a total of nine new phones that will be available this holiday season in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific.

AT&T, the second largest mobile carrier in the United States, announced that it will offer three new Windows phone models from HTC, LG and Samsung and the first one will be the Samsung Focus, which is scheduled to go on sale on Nov. 8.

Two other phones made by HTC and LG will be available in time for the holidays, AT&T said.

All three Windows phone from AT&T will each have a touch screen, 5-megapixel camera and a 1GHz Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm, and will be priced at about 200 U.S. dollars after a two-year service agreement and smartphone data plan.

T-mobile, the fourth largest wireless carrier in the U.S., on Monday also said that it plans to launch HTC HD7, its first Windows Phone 7 handset, in mid-November.

The HTC HD7 features a 4.3-inch touch display, which will be the largest screen available on a Windows phone in the U.S., T- mobile said.

According to Microsoft, more than 60 mobile operators in over 30 countries and regions worldwide have committed to bringing Windows phones to market.

The lineup of the new Windows phones is seen as Microsoft’s boldest move to regain market share in the increasingly competitive smartphone market.

Data from research firm Gartner showed that Microsoft now has a market share of just 5 percent in the global smartphone market, trailing behind Research in Motion’s BlackBerry, phones powered by Google’s Android operating system and Apple’s iPhone.

In a press release, Microsoft noted that despite the success of the iPhone and Android, the global smartphone market is still relatively untapped, hoping that the new phones will give it a " completely fresh start."

While revealing the new phones, Microsoft also touted some features of the Windows Phone 7 software to differentiate itself from competitors.

Different from the current trend toward app-focused phones, the new Windows phones provide active and configurable interface elements called "live tiles" which can show users real-time content, such as social media updates and contacts, Microsoft said.

The company added that the new phones also bring together many of Microsoft’s popular offerings from other platforms, including Xbox, Zune, Office and Bing.
