Microsoft Announces Windows Phone 7 Web Marketplace

Posted by Perusal Friday, October 7, 2011 0 comments

The tech world stood still yesterday as Microsoft unveiled more features in the much anticipated Windows Phone 7 update, Mango, but another important announcement was lost in all the fanfare, and that is the new version of Windows Phone 7 Marketplace Web Store.

The web Marketplace will get a facelift along with some much needed features just in time for the Mango release this Fall/Autumn, the features are not revolutionary but great nonetheless. If you remember, Google launched its own Android Market on the web last year, one of the key features that made it awesome will make its way to Windows Phone 7 web Marketplace. What is this feature you ask, well, the option to download applications over the air, meaning, you download an app from your desktop which get sent your your Windows Phone 7 device and installed right away.

Mango and the new Windows Phone 7 update is expected this Fall/Autumn, we hope no delays are forthcoming.

Found under: Microsoft, Windows Phone 7, tablet, Windows 7, Considering that most mobile operating systems can power up tablets too these days its only a matter of time until we start asking ourselves whether a WP7 tablet is going to come out at any point in the near future. Nokia, Microsoft duel in the shadow of iPhone

Posted by Perusal Monday, October 25, 2010 0 comments

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 — Nokia and Microsoft recently launched their latest mobile offerings in Malaysia to much less fanfare than the massively hyped iPhone 4.

The Finnish phone-maker trotted out its new N-series device, the N8, and boasted that it was the “best cameraphone in the world.”

At the same time, the United States software giant showed off two phones carrying its new mobile OS, Windows Phone 7.

As upbeat as they were about their devices, it can’t be denied that the current king of the smartphone heap is Apple.

The iPhone has become iconic, a status symbol, the latest must-have.

No other phone has had people queuing up for days despite cries from tech pundits everywhere that “it’s just a phone, people!”

At every new smart-phone launch, someone will ask: “Is it the iPhone-killer?” Is the N8 one? Does Microsoft have a chance at killing the Jesus-phone?

Sorry, Nokia, Microsoft. There can only be one phone Messiah and you don’t have it.

Windows Phone 7: impressions

One thing you can say about the Windows Phone 7 interface: it sure is pretty. Windows Mobile has been put to rest as the new UI has gone through a complete facelift. There is a fluidity and slickness that rivals the multiple screen changes of the iPhone and Android phones.

So far only two models will be available in Malaysia come November: HTC’s HD7 and the HTC 7 Mozart. The former will be a Maxis exclusive, retailing at RM2399 while the cheaper Mozart will come in at RM2099.

Though the pricing is competitive, the phones will have a tough time breaking the consumer market.

Why? It’s obvious that Microsoft is pushing Windows Phone 7 squarely at the enterprise market. Take the integrated Office Hub, the most polished of the phone’s featureset that gives users easy access to Word, Excel and PowerPoint. There’s also SharePoint integration as well as easy connections to the cloud storage service SkyDrive.

Earth to Microsoft: how many people in Malaysia (besides Microsofties) use SkyDrive or have even heard of it? You get the feeling thatMicrosoft is aiming hard at the enterprise market currently claimed by RIM and its BlackBerries.

Microsoft has left out one feature, though. Cut and paste. Ironic, considering Microsoft invented the function. Malaysian users will also have no access to Marketplace, its online app store and neither will they be able to use the Zune music store or Xbox Live integration. And what’s with the missing IM client, Microsoft?

Despite the polish of its interface, Windows Phone 7 is neither groundbreaking nor all that innovative. It does however give us hope that unlike Windows Mobile, future phones running on it won’t suck.

Nokia, oh, Nokia

Once upon a time, Nokia unleashed the ultimate do-it-all phone. They called it the N95. After that model, Nokia has yet to produce anything as good. The N96 was boring, the N97 a bug-ridden paperweight and now the N8 is a step forward in some ways, a step back in others.

The N8 is still running Symbian, an OS that has not aged well. What might get people buying it here is the ridiculously low price of RM1690. You are getting incredible bang for your buck with that price as the N8 has features that include:

A 3.5-inch AMOLED widescreen

16GB internal storage

12-megapixel camera with Xenon flash with autofocus

HSDPA/3G/EDGE connectivity

If it’s anywhere as good as the N82, the N8 will be one heck of a cameraphone. Everything else? Well. Symbian is an OS that tends to be fiddly but Nokia faithful will find the UI as familiar and as easy to use as ever.

Build-wise, the N8 is probably one of the sexiest designs Nokia hasever produced. It makes you wonder if the Finns finally saw sense and kidnapped someone from HTC — it’s light, svelte and has a display to rival the iPhone’s much touted Retina display.

It’s ridiculously affordable but you don’t feel Nokia cut any corners. If you’re not into apps but more into multimedia, the N8 takes great pictures and HD video, plays high quality video as well and is a serviceable music player.

All in all, neither phones are serious challengers in the smartphone market. The Nokia N8 is a multimedia bargain while the Windows Phone 7 OS looks promising.  But for the latter, with some features conspicuously missing, I’d suggest buyers wait until the platform is updated. Microsoft says that will likely happen in early 2011.

The smartphone market looks seriously crowded at the moment but for consumers, more choice is always a good thing.

Microsoft unveils new Windows phones

Posted by Perusal Sunday, October 24, 2010 0 comments

Microsoft Corp. on Monday unveiled the first wave of handsets running Windows Phone 7, the software giant’s latest mobile operating system, in an attempt to make new gains in the smartphone market.

Microsoft, together with its partners, showcased a total of nine new phones that will be available this holiday season in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific.

AT&T, the second largest mobile carrier in the United States, announced that it will offer three new Windows phone models from HTC, LG and Samsung and the first one will be the Samsung Focus, which is scheduled to go on sale on Nov. 8.

Two other phones made by HTC and LG will be available in time for the holidays, AT&T said.

All three Windows phone from AT&T will each have a touch screen, 5-megapixel camera and a 1GHz Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm, and will be priced at about 200 U.S. dollars after a two-year service agreement and smartphone data plan.

T-mobile, the fourth largest wireless carrier in the U.S., on Monday also said that it plans to launch HTC HD7, its first Windows Phone 7 handset, in mid-November.

The HTC HD7 features a 4.3-inch touch display, which will be the largest screen available on a Windows phone in the U.S., T- mobile said.

According to Microsoft, more than 60 mobile operators in over 30 countries and regions worldwide have committed to bringing Windows phones to market.

The lineup of the new Windows phones is seen as Microsoft’s boldest move to regain market share in the increasingly competitive smartphone market.

Data from research firm Gartner showed that Microsoft now has a market share of just 5 percent in the global smartphone market, trailing behind Research in Motion’s BlackBerry, phones powered by Google’s Android operating system and Apple’s iPhone.

In a press release, Microsoft noted that despite the success of the iPhone and Android, the global smartphone market is still relatively untapped, hoping that the new phones will give it a " completely fresh start."

While revealing the new phones, Microsoft also touted some features of the Windows Phone 7 software to differentiate itself from competitors.

Different from the current trend toward app-focused phones, the new Windows phones provide active and configurable interface elements called "live tiles" which can show users real-time content, such as social media updates and contacts, Microsoft said.

The company added that the new phones also bring together many of Microsoft’s popular offerings from other platforms, including Xbox, Zune, Office and Bing.

Microsoft sues Motorola over Android phones

Posted by Perusal Saturday, October 9, 2010 0 comments

SEATTLE (Reuters) – Microsoft Corp sued Motorola Inc, alleging patent infringement on the handset maker's line of Android phones, in the latest development in a web of legal actions in the evolving smartphone business.

Microsoft, the world's largest software company, charged that former ally Motorola infringed nine of its patents in the Android-based smartphones, which run on software built by Google Inc.

Microsoft makes its own Windows phone software, which it charges handset makers to use in their phones. Motorola, like some rivals, has shifted toward Google's free Android as a more attractive option, straining the relationship between the two companies.

The suits come 10 days before Microsoft launches the new version of its mobile software, which it hopes will win back market share from Apple Inc's iPhone and Google.

The patents in question relate to synchronizing e-mail, calendars and contacts, scheduling meetings and notifying applications of changes in signal strength and battery power, Microsoft said in a statement.

A Motorola spokeswoman said the company has not yet received a copy of the suit, but based on its strong intellectual property portfolio, plans to "vigorously defend itself."

Google said it was disappointed in Microsoft's move, which it claimed would threaten innovation in the sector. "While we are not a party to this lawsuit, we stand behind the Android platform and the partners who have helped us to develop it," the company said in an e-mailed statement.

The suit is the latest in a complicated series of legal actions between various phone makers and software firms over who owns patents to the technology used in smartphones, kicked off by Nokia suing Apple last year, and Apple subsequently suing handset maker HTC Corp. Oracle Corp has also sued Google over Android software.

"Our action today merely seeks to ensure respect for our intellectual property rights infringed by Android devices," said Horacio Gutierrez, deputy general counsel in charge of Microsoft's intellectual property, in a blog post on the company's website. "Judging by the recent actions by Apple and Oracle, we are not alone in this respect."

Microsoft said it filed its actions against Motorola at the International Trade Commission and in federal court in Seattle.

The case is 2:10-cv-01577 Microsoft Corporation v. Motorola Inc, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington.
